It was a moment of great joy to the women of Siaya County from all the six sub counties when the converged at Nyilima grounds, Rarieda sub-county to mark the international women’s day. The event brought together women from different political, social and economic classes and backgrounds with an aim of celebrating their achievements in the respective areas and raising the awareness of women’s right with the theme of the day being “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.
Siaya Muungano Network partnered with other civil society organizations and other women rights & empowerment groups to make the day a success. Never the less; non-governmental organizations such as Maendeleo ya Wanawake Siaya chapter, Amref health Africa, chs among others also graced the women’s day at Nyilima Grounds.
The chief guest of the day, Siaya county women representative Dr. Christine Ombaka urged women to come together and should not be their own enemies, especially in this electioneering period. “Any woman should not speak ill of a fellow woman even if they are contesting for a political seat, let us conduct our campaigns with decorum, and encourage each other,” said Dr. Ombaka during the International women’s day celebration.
Speaking during the IWD celebration, the chairperson Maendeleo ya Wanawake Siaya Chapter Mrs. Patricia Apoli called upon parents to educate their girls so that they can be in a position to contest for various political seats in future. With this Mrs. Apoli is sure beyond reasonable doubts that gender equality will be met even at leadership levels and as a result we will achieve a sustainable tomorrow.
